Obsidian Generators?

I've made some redstone to obsidian generators in creative that don't work on this server. I hear there are obsidian generators that do work here and I'm curious how they are made as the redstone trick is the only one I know of.

I don't think I'd exactly call that a generator. More like a safe mining method.
